  • A Solar Power-Generating Tonneau Cover? That’s Brilliant!

A solar option for off-grid adventure rigs and electric trucks alike.

Life is all about the pursuit of power. In this case, though, we mean electricity—not horsepower. As overlanding setups and pickups in general become more and more reliant on electricity, companies are getting increasingly creative in developing portable methods to generate, store, and deliver sweet, sweet electrons.

Ontario, Canada-based Worksport, a seller of truck tonneau covers, has created a pretty cool way to generate power by utilizing a truck accessory many trucks already have and many buyers see as a necessity. Enter Worksport’s TerraVis Solar Truck Bed Power System, an all-in-one solar truck bed system and folding tonneau cover. Once you see the TerraVis, you realize the big, flat top area practically begs to be fitted with solar panels that can go to work while the tonneau safeguards your cargo.

The solar tonneau cover incorporates a large amount of high-efficiency monocrystalline solar panels whose cells are modular so any dead ones can be swapped out. A battery bank installed in the bed houses modular lithium-ion batteries that can store more than 2 kW of DC power. There’s also a mobile, breakaway power pack with a 4000-watt AC power inverter and two 2000-watt outlets. The company claims this little power pack stores close to 1 kW of energy and fast-charges from the battery bank in under half an hour.

The TerraVis solar-charging cover can provide in-bed power for today’s gasoline and diesel trucks from model years roughly 2010 an newer. Worksport also plans to offer versions of the TerraVis that provide a “meaningful source of recharge energy”—most likely range extension—for the electric trucks of the future from manufacturers including Rivian, Workhorse, Atlis, Bollinger, Tesla, Hercules, GM, and Ford.

Worksport has two OEM partnerships. The company has joined with Atlis Motor Vehicles to configure the TerraVis as an OE accessory for the (eventual) Atlis XT electric pickup, integrating the TerraVis solar tonneau cover technology with the Atlis’s onboard system to help extend range. TerraVis has also teamed up with Detroit-based Hercules Electric Mobility as a supply partner for the (eventual) Hercules Alpha electric truck, providing a claimed 10 to 20 daily miles of additional, sun-derived power.

Where can you get a TerraVis tonneau? Just like you can’t get an electric truck yet, you also can’t get the mobile panel and solar generator system at this point. It is something we’re going to keep an eye on, though, not only for the EV rigs of the future but also for applications like tailgating, camping, and more.
