WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) — Waynesboro is the latest school system in the Shenandoah Valley to decide to add solar panels.
At Tuesday’s school board meeting, Waynesboro school board members decided to move forward with adding panels to four schools: Waynesboro High School, Kate Collins Middle School, Westwood Hills Elementary School and William Perry Elementary School.
Waynesboro superintendent Jeffrey Cassell said the panels will be a great addition to the schools.
“The positive impact to the environment, positive impact to our utility bills, and the financial situation,” Cassell said.
Cassell added the panels are expected to save the school system a significant amount of money. In addition to saving money, the panels also bring an educational benefit.
“Students who have an interest in science, engineering, mathematics can experience on a day-to-day basis real time, the amount of energy that’s being utilized with the solar panels,” Cassell said.
Cassell said the panels should be completed this year, with construction expected to begin in late summer or early fall.
