Editor’s note: This is part of an ongoing series highlighting construction projects in the Wilmington area to let readers know what is being built or renovated.
Address: 8108 East Oak Island Drive on Oak Island
What was here: The lot was empty.
What is it? Michael Bartlett is opening Solar Brewing. Co., Oak Island’s first brewery.
He is hoping to open by late summer and is planning on having 16 taps available to customers with a 50-person seating capacity.
Most of the taps will feature beer that will be made in-house but he expects to also have beer from other Wilmington area breweries. Bartlett thinks that the local breweries can help one another succeed and believes they are “not in completion with each other, we’re in completion with the mass beer market.”
The reason for the the name is two-fold. The first is that Oak Island is a resort beach community with plenty of sunshine and the second is that Bartlett supports green energy and plans on installing solar panels on his roof in the future.
Since the area is popular with families Bartlett hopes to make the atmosphere family friendly and to offer a craft soft drink line to go along with the extensive beer selection.
He plans on serving pizza and wings at first and in the future hopes to feature specials emphasizing holidays of cultures around the world.
He’s excited about the opportunity and looks forward to serving both locals and tourists alike. Although he’ll be the first brewery on Oak Island he says he “would like to help the Oak Island Southport area become a beer drinker’s destination.”
Quotable: Michael Bartlett on the growth of breweries in the area: “It’s nice to have good relationships with other area breweries since we are all in this together and can help one another succeed.”
